The tees on this hole sit on top of the natural floodplain ridge that continues all the way down to the green. Since there was so much room on this site we had the chance to allow for one fairway below the ridge and one above it. Usually split fairway holes are gimmicks because one fairway or the other is clearly a better and smarter way to go, but not here. Playing the narrower lower fairway takes the green bunkers out of the playline and gives the long axis of the green for the approach. Playing the wider upper fairway reduces the risk of the second shot, but leaves a very difficult and demanding approach shot. But either way requires excellent shotmaking to make par, and birdies will be rare.
