Where History Meets the Spirit of the West Our name pays homage to the year 1883—a monumental time when the city of Medora was founded by the Marquis de Mores. It was a historic year of convergence: in September 1883, within a span of just a few days, three U.S. Presidents passed through or visited this newly founded frontier town in the Dakota Territory. Sitting President Chester A. Arthur, former President Ulysses S. Grant, and a young future President Theodore Roosevelt all stepped foot in Medora. Drawn in by the untamed spirit of the West, it was an experience that would ultimately shape Roosevelt's lifelong conservation ethic.
Today, Hotel 1883 invites families and travelers to do the same: to follow in the footsteps of legends, get away, spend time together, and reconnect with nature. Your experience is steeped in this rich history from the moment you arrive. Guests are greeted at check-in by a stunning, multi-colored custom cow hide mural. Check-in is guaranteed by 4:00 PM MDT. If you arrive before the guaranteed check-in time, you are welcome to stop by the front desk and see if you are able to check-in. Please have your credit card and photo ID with you, both are required to check-in.
Check-out time is 11:00 AM MDT on the day of your departure.
All rooms are non-smoking and no pets are allowed in standard guest room. In the event this policy is violated, we reserve the right to charge a $300 fee.
All guests are required to present a valid credit card for incidentals. Guests choosing to pay with cash must do so at check-in. The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation reserves the right to authorize your card for the full amount of your stay to ensure it is valid.
We are happy to accommodate accessibility needs upon request. All properties have available a portable Deaf/HOH Guest Room Kit and are wheelchair accessible.
Reservations for the Rough Riders Hotel, Badlands Motel, Elkhorn Quarters, and Medora Campground are only available by reservation center staff, available at 1-800-MEDORA-1 or at MEDORA.COM. Lodging properties owned and operated by the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation are exclusively booked in-house and it’s our pleasure to make those reservations for you directly. There are many third-party booking sites out there, so keep an eye out; we cannot guarantee a room booked through an unofficial, third-party booking site will be available upon arrival.
To cancel a reservation, a 24-hour advance notification is required to avoid a cancellation fee. Rooms cancelled after 4:00 PM MDT the day before arrival or no-show reservations will be charged for one night’s stay. Rooms purchased with a package are non-refundable. No pets are allowed in any guest room. In the event this policy is violated, we reserve the right to charge a $300 fee.
